TRAVELING

Some cats travel well, but most do not. If you're moving from one residence to another, your cat will have to travel, too. If you decide to take your cat with you on a long trip, you will need a sturdy carrier. If you fly, you must either provide your own, or rent a carrier from the airline. If you travel by car, a corrugated cardboard carrier will be uncomfortable for anything more than a quick trip across town.

You don't want your cat loose in the car. She will be a driving hazard, and when you stop and open the door, she may bolt and be difficult or impossible to retrieve.

Whenever your cat is in the car during warm or hot weather, keep the air conditioning on. Never park in the sun when your cat is in the car. Just five minutes of direct sunlight on a warm day can raise the temperature inside the car to well over 100 degrees. Your cat could suffer permanent brain damage, or even die.

HOUSE SITTERS AND CAT SITTERS

If you choose to travel without your cat, you may want to engage the services of a full-time cat sitter. This may be a friend or a family member who knows and likes your pet, or a professional pet sitter who will come in twice a day to feed and water the cat. Your cat won't enjoy your absence, but at least she will have the comfort of a familiar environment. Your vet can probably recommend a few good sitters.

Another option is leaving your cat with a friend. Yes, bring over her feeding dish and water bowl, her Nutro food, litter box, sleeping pad, and all her playthings. Tell your friend not to be surprised if your cat remains invisible for a week or two, coming out only late at night to silently eat and then disappear again. Cats can squeeze into narrow openings, under furniture and behind large appliances, causing great apprehension for their temporary hosts.

BOARDING YOUR CAT

Most professional boarding facilities accept cats. Get recommendations from your breeder or vet. Look for a cattery that is ventilated and lit well, that provides separate areas for sleeping, exercise, and eating space, and that will permit your cat to bring her own bed, toys and food.
